Friends of Purton - Gloucestershire Family & Local History
In 1909 a small fleet of timber lighters were beached at Purton to strengthen the eroding canal bank. Known locally as the Purton Hulks, the graveyard is the largest of its kind in Britain at 81 vessels. The site has no legal protection so the Friends were formed to secure the remains of these archaeological treasures. Regular tours of the site take place from March to November.
