Academies are state funded schools, where funding comes directly from central government, rather than through the local education authority. They have the responsibility for setting their own curriculum as well as pay and conditions for staff. The Gloucestershire grammar schools are: The Crypt School (boys), High School for Girls (girls), Marling School (boys), Pate's Grammar School (mixed), Ribston Hall High School (girls), Sir Thomas Rich's School (boys), Stroud High School (girls). All the grammar schools use the same test which is taken at the beginning of October each year. An 11-16 comprehensive school we are proud to be recognised as a ‘high performing specialist school’. We have five specialisms. The school was one of the first in the country to become a Technology College in 1995. Following our success as a Beacon School in the late 1990s, we became the lead school in our Leading Edge Partnership. In 2004, we successfully applied to become a designated Training School. In 2006 and 2007 we achieved two more additional specialisms: Arts and Applied Learning.
