This charming shop and museum is open to the public every day, where you will be served by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. The house is said to be the original building which inspired Beatrix Potter to write her wonderful story The Tailor of Gloucester. Upstairs visitors can read a history of the original tailor and view a small collection of Potter memorabilia, including an automaton of mice working on the waistcoat. Free entry.

It is said that through his work on vaccination here, Dr Edward Jenner saved more lives than any man who has ever lived. See the beautiful gardens and the Temple of Vaccinia and fascinating Vinery. At the end of 2018 the Council closed the Museum and agreed a deal to transfer ownership to Gloucester Historic Buildings/Gloucester Civic Trust who will be re-opening it as an events, education and exhibitions space. The building has an excellent café where visitors can take a break including a delightful “Tudor” garden area when the weather suits. Also on site are a pair of excellent, state of the art, meeting rooms, called the “EdShed”, which are available for hire.

Housed in the former police station and magistrates court, the museum has a wide range of fascinating exhibits showing the history of the Gloucestershire Police Force. Our resident sergeant is always on duty in the station watching over the prisoners, local troublemakers and the public as he has done for over a hundred years. In the first floor courtroom there is a complete magistrates court with a display using models and depicting hearing, as it would have been in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
